And there's a large chunk of PC gamers running far less capable hardware, so anyone with a GTX 960 or lower may finally be tempted to make the switch.
Otherwise, NVIDIA is once again playing this launch straight in terms of bundles. The GTX 1660 is running Nvidia's latest 419.35 drivers, a custom build provided for reviewers in advance of the launch. Please deactivate your ad blocker in order to see our subscription offer. The GTX 1660 Super uses the TU116 die, which is the same one found on the GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti. Or not, since it's still only a minor bump in performance relative to the GTX 1060 6GB for only a slightly better price. Turing cards haven’t been a true generational upgrade over their Pascal predecessors, and GTX 1660 is no different; the new card is about 28% faster than the GTX 1060 3GB it replaces. They already have it, so it's effective cost on whether to upgrade is what they can get for it when they sell it, or if they don't sell it, $0.
GDDR5 of course isn’t as fast as GDDR6 – and critically, this is where GTX 1660 loses a lot of its performance versus GTX 1660 Ti – but it still delivers a good amount of memory bandwidth. In practice the channel has been mostly depleted of GTX 1060 6GB cards anyhow, but whatever cards remain have just been rendered obsolete for retail purposes, as the GTX 1660 is all-around better for the same price or less. GDDR6 Capacity: 6GB
NVIDIA is calling today’s launch a hard launch, though truth be told I’m not convinced it will be quite as hard of a launch as last month’s GTX 1660 Ti.
FP32 GFLOPS: 5,027 Nvidia doesn't have reference designs (aka Founders Editions) for its lower tier products, which means all of the cards are 'custom' designs of various forms.
We’ve updated our terms. Meanwhile the remaining GTX 1060 3GB cards – which were largely under $200 to begin with – will soon face the same fate. And we believe it to be 8x16. Looking elsewhere, the GTX 1660 Ti is 15 percent faster than the 1660, mostly thanks to its higher memory clocks.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 is a mid-tier, Turing-based, desktop GPU. AMD will have an edge in pack-in bundles though, as they’re continuing to offer their Raise the Game Bundle, which for the RX 590 is the full, 3 game pack. The GTX 1660 Ti shows better performance here, moving past the GTX 1070 by a hair at 1080p and 1440p.
Otherwise there are no other changes on the GPU front; in particular all of the ROPs are enabled, and clockspeeds have actually gone up just a tad, with the official boost clock rated for 1785MHz.
This high end chart contains high performance NY 10036.
Improved color compression, fast FP16 support, variable rate shading, and concurrent FP and INT pipelines are all present, though how much they improve performance varies by game—and right now, no games use FP16 to improve performance (it was in Far Cry 5 but later removed).
Though I’m still not a fan of suffixes (as they tend to get unintentionally cut off), this situation is massively better than the GTX 1060 naming system. Bus Width: 192-bit There are a few games where the GTX 1660 isn't able to average 60fps or more, but that's only in notoriously punishing games like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Metro Exodus.

Further, the 1660 has a 12% effective speed advantage over the ~$230 USD 6GB 1060 and a similar real world effective speed to AMD's $265 USD RX 590. We actually had to go through a few board partners before we were able to secure a sample, as other board vendors didn’t have samples available (thanks, EVGA!). Architecture: TU116
NVIDIA is of course using the same TU116 GPU as before, making the GTX 1660 the company’s second-tier TU116 card. Receive news and offers from our other brands? As NVIDIA’s carefully orchestrated rollout of its Turing family of GPUs and related video cards keeps steaming right along, we’re back again this month with the next piece in the GeForce product stack. As it so happens, this means that the GTX 1660 has exactly the same amount of memory bandwidth as the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and 3GB; so on a generational basis, NVIDIA needs to get more performance out of the same amount of memory bandwidth. Early benchmarks show that the GTX 1660 has about a 20% lower effective speed than the 1660 Ti, but with an entry price of $219 USD, the 1660 is also about 20% cheaper. There will likely be factory overclocked models that will run about 5 percent faster on the core clock, and the better models will hit slightly higher speeds, but I wouldn't recommend spending too much extra for such a card. So while this causes the GTX 1660 to fall behind the GTX 1660 Ti by a decent gap, TU116 isn’t completely hamstrung by GDDR5. For the GTX 1060 3GB that change was tossing out half the memory, resulting in a 3GB GDDR5 card that to this day I still think was a short-sighted decision. He's not talking about going out and buying a 970 today at that price.
4k ultra meanwhile is basically out of the question, with Forza Horizon 4 being the best result at 45fps. Base Clock: 1530MHz
My R9 280x still maxes or nearly maxes everything I play.
However rather than a fully-enabled GPU, the TU116 is slightly cut-down, shaving off 2 of the GPU’s 24 SMs, leaving 22 enabled for a total of 1408 CUDA cores. The 1660 range of cards sit in the sweet spot for many gamers because they offer superb 1080p EFps in popular titles and they are relatively hassle free … For video outputs, Zotac provides one HDMI 2.0b port along with three DisplayPort 1.4 ports, and it can run all four outputs simultaneously. Please refresh the page and try again.
Of course it's not. Note also that the 10-series GPUs are likely to become more difficult to find at decent prices now that the GTX 1660/Ti and RTX cards are shipping, so while I wouldn't necessarily recommend upgrading from a 10-series card yet, if you're putting together a new gaming PC the GTX 1660 is a great option.

Assuming the OP bought the 970 new, it's a fair comparison to look at current $329 cards. Transistor counts increased from 4.4 billion to 6.6 billion, and die size also went up from 200mm^2 to 284mm^2. The smaller the overlap between the yellow and green bars, the better the value for money. Gone is GDDR6 in favor of cheaper, more widely available GDDR5, and better still you get a full 6GB of it. Some games punish cards with less than 6GB or even 8GB of VRAM at these settings, but in general the GTX 1660 should be fine.
TDP: 120W Thankfully, for the GTX 1660 vanilla, NVIDIA is doing something different: swapping out cutting-edge GDDR6 for the tried and true backbone of the video card industry that is GDDR5. My GPU test system uses a Core i7-8700K overclocked to 5.0GHz to help minimize CPU bottlenecks during testing, along with other high-end components.

The GTX 1660 takes over for Nvidia as the new "sweet spot" for mainstream GPUs.
At any rate, by the time this article goes live, we should have a better idea of just how well-stocked this launch is. With the Zotac GTX 1660, I was able to push the GDDR5 from 8GT/s to 9.4GT/s (+700MHz), a 17.5 percent increase.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660
For overclocking, I set the core voltage slider to +100 in MSI Afterburner, increased the power limit to 111 percent, and increased the fan speed to 75 percent. Looking at the product stacks, within NVIDIA’s product stack this card is set to replace the GTX 1060 3GB, with the earlier GTX 1660 Ti having done the same to the GTX 1060 6GB.
I didn't even make it 3 hours into Friday the 13th before losing power.
